With Skyfall’s release rapidly approaching (it’s only a fortnight away now) I have finally been bitten by the Bond bug, and have moved from simply looking forward to it, to experiencing full blown excitement. Adele’s Skyfall track (below) has won me over, although it took a few listens, and to me the trailer indicates that we could have a pretty great Bond film coming up; both as a standalone adventure, and as a celebration of Bond’s 50th anniversary. I’ll be outlining a couple of thoughts below about the trailer, and also read on for a little information regarding an upcoming series of Bond related posts.
I was a fan of the way that Die Another Day celebrated the 40th anniversary of Bond; I thought that the idea of including loads of Bond’s previous gadgets in that one scene with Q was a really nice way of acknowledging the fans, and also generally looking fondly back on the franchise’s history. Skyfall’s trailer (below) indicates a similar attitude; with Bond saying ‘You must be joking’ to Q, and then the fact that Q is actually in it being obviously reminiscent of Bond’s past. But there are also little details such as the cuff adjustment after Bond jumps into the back of the partially destroyed train, it strongly recalls the old Bond, particularly Brosnan’s moments in both the tank and the boat, and it’s little details like this in the trailer which, for me generate the feeling that Skyfall is positively embracing its past. I enjoy the new direction that Casino Royale took, and so I’m not attempting to say that Bond should morph back to resemble its predecessors, but simply that these elements do work well, and that it’s nice to see Skyfall seemingly recognising, and playing with its 50th anniversary status.
I would also like to let you know that there will be a series of Bond articles coming up soon as Skyfall’s release date draws closer. There will be a mixture of articles including a guest one – so do look out for that, and if anyone else is interested in contributing towards this then do please get in touch. For now though, leave a comment below if you have any particular opinions on Skyfall’s trailer or song – I have certainly heard many mixed opinions about both so far! It seems to me that all the right things are in place, as best as I can possibly tell. It certainly has a great cast – I’m very excited to see Javier Bardem’s Bond villain, there seems to be a decent level of action and also relationship based conflict which should be interesting, but as to the final result – we don’t have too long left to find out, and I for one am getting pretty excited.
