Zombieland – Review (Spoiler Free)

Zombieland Movie PosterThe zombie apocalypse has taken place. Most of humanity now shuffles around trying to eat flesh whilst moaning a lot. The few survivors have only lived this long due to either having brains or brawn, or in Columbus’s (Jesse Eisenberg) case, it’s by strictly following a set of self-determined rules.  We are introduced to all of these in a really slick and stylish opening few minutes, accompanied in part by Metallica’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. To be honest, I was already pretty sold on the movie by this point. There’s a load of humour, blood, zombies, and you get the feeling that this movie is here to purely provide you with a really good time – and it certainly manages to.

Zombieland is often described as America’s answer to Shaun of the Dead, and I reckon that’s a pretty fair description. It’s not as intelligent or as knowing, but it’s pretty close and delivers in a similar way. The film’s set within the typical zombie apocalypse tradition; survivors who are almost complete opposites of each other are forced to work together in order to survive, and in this film that’s the nerdy, Mountain Dew drinking, World of Warcraft playing Columbus, who is paired with the zombie hating, tough guy Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson).  The dynamic between them is predictable but is still a lot of fun to watch, and although at first they may appear to be fairly shallow characters, during the course of the film it becomes apparent that these are actually a couple of fleshed out and nicely realised roles. The rest of the cast is comprised of Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. Stone predictably is great; breathing life and a lot of humour into what could easily have been merely the ‘hot chick’ role. Breslin is also a real surprise, easily keeping up with her co-stars despite her young age.

Apart from the cast, the film also has a lot of other elements to recommend it. There’s a good mixture of humour, stylized violence, and one utterly perfect cameo moment. I think nearly everyone knows who the actor/actress is that makes the appearance, but I’ll not spoil it just in case. What you should know is that those who tout this as the greatest ever cameo have a very strong case on their hands; it’s a lot of fun and is expertly handled. It’s almost worth seeing the film for it alone!

If you haven’t seen Zombieland, as I hadn’t (thank you to all of you who have recommended it to me), it’s definitely one that you shouldn’t miss. Grab a bowl of popcorn, get a few beers in and just have fun with it. I doubt you’ll regret it.

  1. Can’t believe I haven’t seen this, I will have to give this a look.

    1. I certainly recommend that you do! 😀

  2. I enjoyed this one, but I think it will always be thought of as the American Shaun of the Dead.

    1. Yeah I reckon so as well 😦
      Which one do you prefer?

  3. Love Zombieland …. great cameo in it as well…. I heard this was originally pitched as a TV show and now supposedly it may be back on as a show …. fingers crossed it turns out decent.

    1. Yeah it’s supposed to be returning to its TV routes. I heard that they will be continuing with the same characters but new actors though. If that’s true then they’re are already on really dodgy ground there.

  4. Zombieland is a pretty awesome movie. I love Bill Murray’s cameo in the film, it was really funny. Nice review.

    1. Thanks man, it certainly is a lot of fun and Murray is just perfect!

  5. Good review Rumsey. A bunch of fun, and even better because of Harrelson and his flawless act of just being a total cook from start-to-finish.

    1. Cheers, Harrelson certainly is great in this one!

  6. I guess I’ve never thought of it as America’s Shaun of the Dead. I’ve never been that beholding to that movie that I would consider like films that followed to be derivative. To me, Zombiland is just a funny zombie comedy. Woddy Harrelson is great here, as is Esisenberg and Stone. Cant wait for the sequel… its should be coming soon!

    1. I’ve heard the phrase thrown around a fair bit. It’s a little derivative but I kind of treat it as a positive thing – they are very close in terms of quality in my opinion but also distinctly British/American. Two great versions of roughly the same concept! Fair enough treating it as it’s own film, it certainly stands alone and doesn’t need comparisons to other films to hold it up.

Yeah Harrelson steals the show somewhat but the others are all great as well! More Zombieland is good by me 😀

  7. This film is an audience pleaser. Even one of my friends, a self-proclaimed film snob, loves it. My school even chose it as one of the films to air last year during Halloween week. It really is a lot of fun, isn’t it?

    1. Yeah it’s lots of fun – it’s great to put on on a Friday night with a few friends!
It’s good to hear that your friend liked it! I had a similar experience with somebody and Kick-Ass 🙂

  8. Love this film, very clever and funny 😀

    1. It certainly is! Glad to hear you’re also a fan Tim 🙂

  9. One of my favorite zombie movies. Its a lot of fun.

    1. Thanks for liking and commenting Issy 🙂
Do you prefer this or Shaun of the Dead?

Thought this film was brill! Great review!

    1. Cheers! It really is a great one 😀

  11. Awesome movie! Fun fact: I’ve been to the theme park where they filmed the last part of the movie.

    1. That’s a really great fact! Where you there before or after they made the movie?

      1. I had been there a few years before the movie was made. It’s in Georgia.

        1. Nice 😀 Apparently the theme park ending wasn’t originally in the script – can’t imagine it without that final setting!

  12. This was a great movie, so much fun. And I was so close to being a part of it all. 😉

    1. It sure is 🙂 How come?!?

      1. I was called in to audition/interview to be Emma Stone’s stand in for this movie. Didn’t get it though. 🙂

        1. That’s an awesome fact! Shame that you didn’t get it, but it’s still really great 😀

          1. It was a really great experience. 🙂 I didn’t get to meet her but I did run into Emma, almost literally lol, when she was coming in for a fitting.

          2. That counts as meeting her in my book! You have no idea how jealous I am right now! 🙂

Great review 🙂 I’m glad my recommendation was a good one 🙂
Do you prefer it to Shaun of the Dead?

    1. Thanks Natalie, and thank you again for the recommendation!
I prefer Shaun of the Dead to this one, but they aren’t far apart 🙂 You?

I prefer Shaun of the Dead too but, again, it’s a close call 🙂

        1. Sure, well it’s nice to hear that you agree they are close. They’re both great films 😀

  14. Great review, man. I LOVE this movie. It made me laugh so hard.

    1. Thanks 😀 It certainly is a lot of fun! I want to see it again soon actually, I had a really good time with it.

  15. Such a fun film. I don’t like the possibility of the the TV series though. They could do a film sequel but that’s about it I reckon.

    1. The TV series is a real dodgy area for me. I think it could work; the zombie kill of the week bit from the film would lend itself pretty naturally, but if they do go ahead (as I think they are) using the same characters but different actors then I really have my doubts about it succeeding.
I would be up for seeing a film sequel though!

  16. I have too only just seen it. So much better than I thought it would be, and Emma Stone looked so good in this!!!

    1. She certainly did! I reckon it’s probably the role that she looks best in, not that she ever doesn’t look good. Perhaps Gangster Squad may be her best, I haven’t seen it yet but I assume that she looks pretty nice there considering her role 🙂

  17. Love this film! I actually prefer it to Shaun of the Dead…even my mum found it funny and that’s saying something as far as zombie films are concerned!! If you haven’t seen it, check out Cockney’s Vs Zombies…you may like it, another British Zom-Com

    1. Haha! Can’t imagine my mum would enjoy it 😀
I haven’t seen Cockney’s Vs Zombies yet, I’ll keep an eye out for it. Thanks!
