Bond 24 is named SPECTRE – cast and poster revealed!

SPECTRE headerThat title tells us everything we need to know… the ultimate Bond villains are finally back!

Whilst the title leaves little to the imagination regarding who our villains are going to be in Bond’s next offering, it does an awful lot in getting every Bond fan’s heart racing. It’s been a long time since we last saw anything to do with S.P.E.C.T.R.E (33 years in fact) due to legal battles which were finally resolved last year, and I have to say it’s exciting to have them back. Skyfall left us with a clear message that classic Bond had returned and was going to fit comfortably into the 21st century, and having the classic villains reappear can only be taken as further proof of the franchise returning to its roots. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the organisation is updated to suit the sensibilities of today; are there going to be plans to ransom the world or start world war three? Or are things going to be reigned in a bit? If Blofeld does return as we expect him to, how will he fit into a world which now knows Dr Evil almost as well?

Spectre castThe cast is not full of surprises if you’re a Bond fan and have had one eye at least on the news over the last few weeks. As expected Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris  and Ben Whishaw are returning alongside Craig of course and as we knew Christoph Waltz and Lea Seydoux are joining the cast for this adventure. Waltz is being billed as Oberhauser -Bond’s former ski instructor, but nobody, including myself, is going to completely buy that until we actually see the film and find out if he is really Blofeld or not. The two surprises in the cast list are Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott and Monica Bellucci, both of whom I’m pretty interested in seeing in their respective roles.

The character of Bond’s former skiing instructor is interesting seeing as Bond’s parents died in a climbing accident. Given that, and the fact that it was brought up in the last film, it seems fairly likely that there may be a connection here between Bond’s orphan status and S.P.E.C.T.R.E which would be very interesting to see play out. Given that they also butchered his one real shot at happiness in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service  it seems almost cruel to have them also be responsible for his parent’s death… but we will have to wait and see. Talking about OHMSS; is it just me or is that bullet hole on the poster something of a call back to Tracey’s death? As unlikely as it is that it would be used as a plot point, it certainly seems pretty reminiscent. The cracks in the glass referencing S.P.E.C.T.R.E’s octopus logo is also a rather nice touch (see my mocked up version below).

SPECTRE EditSo it’s a pretty exciting day to be a Bond fan today all in all! I would love to hear your thoughts on the cast, the title, the poster and more in the comment box below. After all we have a long time now to sit and get excited about SPECTRE!

  1. I was actually almost fainting at my workplace when I saw the news today, it’s sounds so awesome I might actually faint again… 🙂 Love getting Spectre back in the game, ohhh Blofeld, all is forgiven, come back….

    1. Haha I was the same! I can’t wait to see how this all pans out. Hopefully over the course of a few films as well.

  2. This is some pretty damn exciting news, man. I agree with you though, I don’t think there’s a single Bond fan (or even casual fan) that sees Christoph Waltz relegated to a role like his former skiing instructor. Even if that’s an important role, I think the cat’s out of the bag. I cannot WAIT until next November. Good grief, that’s way too far away!

    1. Isn’t it just! No I think if they are going to cast Waltz as a Bond villain they have to go pretty big with the role they give him.
November really is such a long long time away!

  3. Very, very exciting news!

    1. I certainly is!

  4. I’m a kid waiting for Santa, but he will not show up for 337 nights still. How am I going to sleep?

    1. Haha I know that feeling extremely well! We will have to muster through by watching loads of old Bond films!

  5. I hadn’t heard about the details of Waltz’ character – but I completely agree with you that his being a skiing instructor is linked into Bond’s parents’ death. After bringing it into the previous film, I think it’s likely that this is an area of the character Mendes likes to explore.

I was also wondering if the gunshot was a reference to Tracy’s death. It could be put there deliberately as a reminder that SPECTRE like to hit Bond where it hurts…

    1. Yeah I think you’re right that it’s more of a reminder rather than a plot point. It would probably confuse people since Craig had Vesper and Tracey may not have happened yet… but then again after Skyfall I guess Tracey may have … who knows.

    2. It’s also worth noting that the last appearance of ‘Blofeld’ (the chimney bit) was also linked to Tracey as RM was visiting her grave.

  6. I hope its more like Casino Royale than Skyfall. I love Christophe Waltz though, he rarely disappoints

    1. Not a fan d Skyfall then? How come?

  7. I can’t wait for this movie, love the Bond movies so much.

    1. I’m exactly the same! Counting down the days now until SPECTRE!

      1. The countdown begins. I love the cast assembled.

        1. Yeah Waltz in particular!

  8. […] in December about the upcoming film, Spectre, which sees the return of Skyfall‘s Sam Mendes, boasts an impressive cast list, a ridiculously cool poster, & a title which blatantly announces the return of SPECTRE, the […]
