Whilst the title leaves little to the imagination regarding who our villains are going to be in Bond’s next offering, it does an awful lot in getting every Bond fan’s heart racing. It’s been a long time since we last saw anything to do with S.P.E.C.T.R.E (33 years in fact) due to legal battles which were finally resolved last year, and I have to say it’s exciting to have them back. Skyfall left us with a clear message that classic Bond had returned and was going to fit comfortably into the 21st century, and having the classic villains reappear can only be taken as further proof of the franchise returning to its roots. It’s going to be very interesting to see how the organisation is updated to suit the sensibilities of today; are there going to be plans to ransom the world or start world war three? Or are things going to be reigned in a bit? If Blofeld does return as we expect him to, how will he fit into a world which now knows Dr Evil almost as well?
The cast is not full of surprises if you’re a Bond fan and have had one eye at least on the news over the last few weeks. As expected Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw are returning alongside Craig of course and as we knew Christoph Waltz and Lea Seydoux are joining the cast for this adventure. Waltz is being billed as Oberhauser -Bond’s former ski instructor, but nobody, including myself, is going to completely buy that until we actually see the film and find out if he is really Blofeld or not. The two surprises in the cast list are Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott and Monica Bellucci, both of whom I’m pretty interested in seeing in their respective roles.
The character of Bond’s former skiing instructor is interesting seeing as Bond’s parents died in a climbing accident. Given that, and the fact that it was brought up in the last film, it seems fairly likely that there may be a connection here between Bond’s orphan status and S.P.E.C.T.R.E which would be very interesting to see play out. Given that they also butchered his one real shot at happiness in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service it seems almost cruel to have them also be responsible for his parent’s death… but we will have to wait and see. Talking about OHMSS; is it just me or is that bullet hole on the poster something of a call back to Tracey’s death? As unlikely as it is that it would be used as a plot point, it certainly seems pretty reminiscent. The cracks in the glass referencing S.P.E.C.T.R.E’s octopus logo is also a rather nice touch (see my mocked up version below).
So it’s a pretty exciting day to be a Bond fan today all in all! I would love to hear your thoughts on the cast, the title, the poster and more in the comment box below. After all we have a long time now to sit and get excited about SPECTRE!
