I know, I know – we are all pretty much done with the Pirates films. For the longest time they have felt like nothing but cheap cash in after cheap cash in, but because I’m a sucker for a challenge I decided that I would hunt around for five reasons we should have some hope for the next Pirates outing.
This idea came about after the news that Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner) has been cast as the film’s female lead and that filming will begin on the movie early next month. You can expect to see the finished film on July 7th 2017.
Anyway, here are my top five reasons why Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales may not be all bad…
There are a number of new characters being introduced in the next film and the central plot doesn’t seem to be centered on Captain Jack Sparrow. We can only hope that this is the case as every film after the first one got the balance wrong by putting Jack front and centre, a move which really unbalances the tone of the films. It does appear that we might not be focused on the crazy captain in this next film.
The rumour is that Brenton Thwaites will be playing Will and Elizabeth Turner’s son, a move which will bring the focus back to the family storylines which dominated the first three films. Again it will take the focus away from Sparrow and I for one have no issue with seeing Turner return.
The new directors are Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg who were responsible for Kon-Tiki; the seafaring adventure which did so well last year. If anyone can bring the series back to feeling like a classic pirate adventure it’s these guys and I’m really looking forward to seeing what they do with the new film.
If anything destroyed the second and third film it was the enormous budget they were given which allowed them to create great CGI marvels over things that weren’t quite as impressive such as coherent storylines and well developed characters. A reduced budget should help reign them in a bit which can only be a good thing.
When you’ve got Javier Bardem to play your villain you know you’re onto a good thing. The man is a great actor with many extremely memorable villains under his belt and he isn’t afraid to experiment and give us something we’re not quite expecting. If there is one reason I want to see the next Pirates film it’s because Bardem is in it.
I know there are few reasons to get genuinely excited for the next film in this tired franchise but what do you think of the five I’ve picked out? Let me know in the comment box below!
