The still is taken from Redmayne’s new film The Danish Woman where he will be portraying the man Einar Wegener who eventually became an early pioneer into transgenderism in the early 20th century. Wegner’s transformation began when his wife the artist Gerda Wegener asked him to pose as a woman when her model failed to show up for a session. He found the sensation of wearing stockings surprisingly comfortable and wound up regularly modelling for his wife. By the early 30’s she was undergoing experimental surgery in order to physically become Lili Elbe.
Encouragingly Redmayne is working with Alexandra Reynolds who was the movement director who assisted him into becoming Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. If he can observe and internalise the ‘minutiae of feminine physicality’ as he puts it as well as he did Hawking’s movement patterns then this could be a very special performance indeed. In fact I’m excited enough to see him take on roles like this that I’m willing to just ignore Jupiter Ascending and pretend it didn’t happen!
What do you think of this transformation? Are you intrigued to see the film later this year? Make sure you let me know in the comment section below!
