Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker (Season 6, Episode 3)

The body count increases, oaths are broken and Jon Snow does indeed know nothing…

Heavy Spoiler Warning: If you haven't yet seen Episode 3 of Season Six it is strongly advised that you do not read this article.

Season Six continues to move its plot and key pieces along at a stunning pace, and although Oathbreaker was a slightly more ponderous episode than those which have come before, it is all the stronger for it.

My biggest criticism of the series as of late is that a few key characters have been given stagnant story-lines. I’m thinking of Arya’s training which feels like it has been going on for years, Daenerys’ journey to Westeros which began to drag almost as soon as she settled down and Sansa’s ordeal at the hands of Ramsey. All of these stories have seemingly had an adrenaline injection and consequently are finally moving on forward. It’s going to be really good to see this lot finally get back into the main game at hand and take on the key roles we have come to expect them to play.

In fact just about everyone is focused, angry and steaming forward; Jon Snow has come back from the void and is a changed man for it, the terrible Lannister twins are pressing ahead in their attempt to regain control and Tyrion (whilst not angry) is certainly starting the key steps necessary in the fight for Meereen. It’s thrilling to watch the players begin to play the game again. For ages it has felt as if everyone has been purely reacting to events as they happen but now we finally seem to be returning to a game best played by those who use cunning, bribery and intelligence. Talking of such people it seems that next week we will finally catch up with one of the Game’s greatest players, Littlefinger. I cannot wait to see what schemes he has up his sleeve….

Game of Thrones so far seems to be on top form again, all the players are in motion, the show feels both confident and focused and we have the definite feeling that things are beginning to build to a final end game. Next week is going to be a fascinating one I think. Will we get more answers from Bran’s visions? Will Jon and Sansa finally give us a much desired Stark reunion? And just what fate awaits the youngest of the Starks…?

  1. Excellent write-up! Really enjoying this season so far, but I agree with you about the couple of storylines that felt stagnant before this point. My current real worry, though, is about what’s going to happen to Rickon. That Ramsay, what a villain!

    1. Thanks Anna! Yeah it’s been so strong so far, including last night’s episode. Have you seen it yet?

I know… I just really hope Rickon makes it out alive, can’t bear much more sadness for the Stark family now when things are beginning to improve.

      1. Oh gosh, I am crossing all of my fingers for Rickon. It doesn’t look good!
