A Brief Encounter with John Maclean

John Maclean

Director/Writer
Why directing?

Why not…! Erm… these days I think why writing, or why tell stories, or why tell this particular story…. Directing to me is just working out the best way to tell the story you want to tell.

How did you make you first break into the industry?

Meeting Conor, Michael Fassbender’s agent – he took my writing seriously and showed Michael my ‘home made’ videos I was making at the time, and Michael for giving up a Sunday to shoot with an unknown director.

Your most insane day at work?

The last day of shooting Slow West was pretty crazy – I had to get all the final shots in the shoot out sequence and with a film like Slow West there would be no re-shoots. We had one camera – the effects guys were making bullet hits on the house with little explosions the art dep were running around with props to be smashed up with a high powered ball-bearing air gun, the costume dep were swapping bloody clothes for clean clothes, we had about 3 days of shots to get in a day, we did it and it was a lot of fun….

Most interesting person you’ve ever met?

Last week I met an elderly lady in a cafe in central London, she shared my table and got talking, turns out she was John Huston’s script supervisor, (Angela Allen) and had worked on most Huston films including African Queen etc.
Most other interesting people are my friends, my family and my wife. My 2 year old kid is pretty interesting too.

Have you any hidden talents?

I could walk on my hands, not sure if I still can, it hasn’t been called into use for a long time.

Ultimate dream film?

My next one, I dream that ultimately it’s going to be good, or if you mean the film I like most that captures the dream state, then Night of the Hunter, or Meshes of the Afternoon by Maya Deren.

Person you’d like to meet?

Obama.

Current project(s)?

Writing my second film, early days (its not called Early Days, its early in the writing process).

Any pearls of wisdom for upcoming talent?

If you don’t have a writing partner, then learn to write, tell stories to your mates, look at their reactions and notice when they are thrilled and when they get bored.
